Addressing Climate Change

At Karra Society for Rural Action (KSRA), our mission is to tackle climate change through impactful actions that enhance community resilience. Committed to the Paris Climate Agreement and the National Action Plan (NAP), we blend scientific knowledge, grassroots efforts, and innovative solutions to foster a sustainable future for all. Recognizing the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and children, we empower women through training in organic farming, multilayer farming, and horticulture, promoting gender equality alongside environmental sustainability.

Empowering Communities
We empower women by training them to create solar products and become solar technicians, known as "Solar Sakhis." We assist villages in adopting solar energy, making daily life easier and more sustainable, and are installing mini solar grids in many villages across Jharkhand.

Environmental Restoration
Our environmental initiatives include reforestation and combating desertification, using geo-tagged activities for precision. We help communities restore and recharge groundwater through rainwater harvesting, constructing ponds, wells, dobhas, and soak pits for irrigation and groundwater replenishment.

Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA)
As part of the National Action Plan, we focus on Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA), emphasizing habitat and ecosystem restoration. Our future plans include establishing solar grids to support villages in Jharkhand. We have planted trees on over 1,000 hectares of barren land and geo-tagged them.
Our comprehensive approach in Jharkhand aims to address climate change through:
Economic and Social Empowerment: Enhancing local community resilience.
Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration: Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems.
Increased Carbon Storage: Promoting activities that enhance carbon sequestration.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Maintaining traditional practices and cultural heritage.
Sustainable Food Production: Encouraging practices that ensure food security.
We collaborate with various stakeholders to prioritize ecosystem services and design EbA initiatives, ensuring effective implementation.
Translating national adaptation plans into actionable, community-driven EbA initiatives involves local actors such as farmers, fisherfolk, forest managers, and city engineers in restoring and managing ecosystems.

Climate Education and Awareness
Educating communities, especially tribal groups reliant on forests, about climate change is crucial. Our initiatives include:
Community Workshops: Conducting workshops and seminars on climate change causes and impacts.
Public Education: Launching awareness programs to mobilize villagers about the importance of climate action.

Mitigation Strategies
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to slowing climate change. Our initiatives include:
Renewable Energy Projects: Promoting solar power and other renewable energy sources in various villages.
Energy Efficiency: Advocating for energy-efficient practices and technologies in homes, businesses, and public institutions.
Sustainable Transportation: Encouraging public transportation, cycling, and electric vehicle use to reduce carbon footprints.

Adaptation and Resilience
Helping communities adapt to changing climates is vital. We support:
Resilient Infrastructure: Developing infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events.
Agricultural Adaptation: Assisting farmers with resilient techniques and crops suited to climate variability.
Disaster Preparedness: Training communities in disaster risk reduction and emergency response.

Conservation and Restoration
Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems is critical for carbon sequestration and biodiversity. Our efforts include:
Reforestation and Afforestation: Planting trees and restoring forests to absorb carbon dioxide.
Wetland Restoration: Protecting and rehabilitating wetlands as natural buffers.
Biodiversity Protection: Conserving local flora and promoting biodiversity.

Advocacy and Policy Change
Advocating for policy changes and systemic transformations is essential for addressing climate change on a larger scale. Our efforts include:
Policy Advocacy: Lobbying for robust climate policies at local, national, and international levels.
International Collaboration: Securing global climate funds to initiate projects and share knowledge.
Corporate Engagement: Encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable practices and reduce carbon footprints.
